Prime

Biosphere of Primitives

PRIME is a concept study that features a biosphere based on primitive shapes while using sophisticated materials. The primary purpose of this project is improving my sketching skills. The secondary purpose is doing conceptional research with minimalistic geometries and various materials/ fabrics. If not otherwise stated all original concept designs featured in this project were made traditionally on paper or 2D drawing software on an iPad Pro.

Preamble

In vector computer graphics, 3D CAD systems, and geographic information systems, geometric primitive (or prim) is the simplest (i.e. 'atomic' or irreducible) geometric shape that the system can handle. Sometimes the subroutines that draw the corresponding objects are called "geometric primitives" as well. The most "primitive" primitives are point and straight line segment, which were all that early vector graphics systems had. In constructive solid geometry, primitives are simple geometric shapes such as a cube, cylinder, sphere, cone, pyramid, torus.

Decorative items for households made of primitives

I got the 1st inspiration on this project in late 2021 when I visited a store for household decoration items in my home town. After seeing those items immediately two major design aspects popped into my mind. ...

  • The overall structure of those items consisted of primitive geometries that had rounded corners.
  • The rounded corners of the items were worn out so it was possible to see the base material (wood) under the paint (pastel tones) layer.

I thougt about adapting that look for a short animation scene in Blender 3D or better in a Three.js scene inside a web browser. I dropped the Three.js idea because this JavaScript 3D library isn't capable of rendering sophisticated materials like worn wood or fabrics like denim. I also dropped the idea doing the concept in Blender 3D because dealing with simple geometries is a good opprtunity to practise sketching with traditional media.

FAQ

[?] Are you a pro concept artist?

No, I'm a hobbyist.

[?] Do you take commissions?

Not at the moment.

[?] Wanna join our dope NFT project?

WTF!? No!

[?] Can I use your stuff to train my AI algorithm?

STFU!

[?] Do you use AI tools?

Partly, I use ChatGPT4 for data analysis, grammar/translation but I don't use AI backed image generation for concpets or designs.

[?] Are you open for collaborations?

It depends, however I like to participate on community projects.

[?] What 3D tools do you use?

Moi3D, SolidEdge, MagicaVoxel, Nomad and in rare cases Blender.

[?] Where do you want to go?

The BACKLOG gives a small hint on my future projects.

[?] Why don't you focus on one style?

I don't want to become an expert for one specific style. I love to try out new things. This can derive a new perspective on a topic that I'm working on.

[?] Do you use references?

Generally, I don't use them. I don't want to copy others, I want to create something new but if I discover an interesting detail I try to adopt.

[?] Do you know good books on concept design?

I like "Designing Design" by Japanese designer Kenya Hara for layouting. I like "Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams" in regard to industrial design. I recommend to check the 10 Design Principles by Dieter Rams.

[?] Why don't you use large pics on your landing page?

Less is more. I prefer a fast loading page while trying to avoid white spaces and meaningless big pictures.

[?] Why do you use Japanese characters on your landing page?

This is part of the aesthetics of this site, I'm a fan of the Japanese internet pop culture.

[?] Do you speak Japanese?

I don't, ChatGPT 4 helped me to translate texts for this site from English to Japanese.

[?] What is TurbinePunk?

Turbinepunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that incorporates retro-futuristic technology and aesthetics inspired by 20th-century turbine-powered machinery. It is my favourite BACKLOG project and I will release more concept designs on this topic soon.

[?] How to contact you?

Via Discord.

[?] What about data privacy?

This website doesn't track visitors or collect user data. Zero data collection = zero problems.

[?] Can I use your content?

Okay, but before you are doing so please check the COPYRIGHT section.
