Biosphere of Primitives
プリミティブの生態系
Solaris project was inspired by Stanisław Lem's "Solaris" novel. The plot is about a crew of scientists on a research station who attempt to understand an extraterrestrial intelligence, which takes the form of a vast ocean on the titular alien planet. All models and renders were made in free 3d graphic software Magicavoxel by Ephtracy.
Preamble
前文
Solaris Station was my 1st larger scale scenes that I did with MagicaVoxel. Designing the assets was challanging for me as a beginner. Thus I designed the structures and whole models in Moi3D NURBS modelling software and used the *.obj file format export to import those models into MagicaVoxel. If you want to safe efforts and nerves because of time-consuming re-scaling iteration cycles in MagicaVoxel importing *.obj files is a great time saver.
I was not happy with the direction this project took, and I also felt unmotivated to design more assets for finalizing this scene. So I decided to use the gained workflow knowledge for another huge model.
Spacestation
宇宙ステーション
Designing large models of spaceships, architectural structures and other technical stuff is not such difficult if you can reuse basic elements again and again. The key idea is designing modules that can be combined to model large sub-systems.
To do so I decomposed an early concept design of the spacestation into sub-systems and their atomic modules that can be seamlessly combined with each other. Those sub-systems are ...
- Laboratories,
- Propulsion Systems,
- Tank/Fuel Systems,
- Habitats,
- Energy Systems,
- Gravitators,
- Life Capsules,
- Rescue Capsules,
- Joint Modules,
- Command Bridge.
During the design phase I reused assets from the Solaris Station concept like the landing ship (incl. docking interface) and the habitats. The final result was a large spaceship with a total length of > 1500 voxels.
